Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
