From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.

Some Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release

But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But a few do not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.

“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued

However, overall discourse on the political right was comparatively muted after the release, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given physical folders of materials that included little previously unseen data.
